With many of the main energy companies announcing price rises in recent months, many people are looking for ways to cut their consumption of electricity. This type of energy is something that we take for granted, though it’s when a big fat bill lands at our doormat when we realize that something has to change. Make sure you understand where the electricity comes from, how it is generated, how the electric meter functions, and how you can be more energy-efficient.

So how exactly can you reduce the amount of electricity you use? Well, you can start by following these five effective tips.

1) Switch your energy supplier

One of the easiest ways to save money is to compare how much you would spend with a different supplier. Most people are far too happy to just let their over-inflated bill each month without much of a thought, but it’s possible to find a great affordable energy plan and save hundreds of dollars a year by finding a supplier and tariff that suits your needs better.

For example, if you reside in the Houston area, you can compare electricity providers in Texas and choose the one that is more suitable. There are a number of websites that allow you to compare prices and switching is actually far easier than you may think.

2) Don’t leave TV’s and gadgets on standby

With so many gadgets and technology devices in the home nowadays, electricity can be drained very quickly if they are aren’t turned off when not being used. Leaving televisions, computers and games consoles on standby can cost you a huge amount over the course of the year, so ensure that you turn these off every time you stop using them.

3) Change your lightbulbs

Energy-saving light bulbs were once a bit of a novelty, but now they are so widely available and affordable that there really is no excuse not to use them. If you have any lights in your home that aren’t using energy-saving bulbs then change them today – they use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

Investing to talk to your local electricians about energy saving systems not just on lights greatly helps as well, for around Sydney, you can visit: https://www.acesydneyelectricians.com.au/domestic-services

4) Don’t use a tumble-dryer

Although highly practical, tumble-dryers are actually one of the biggest drainers of electricity you can get in the home. Instead, use a clothesline outside or if you don’t have an outside area dry them on a rack near to a radiator or window. If you really need to use the tumble dryer, make sure you aren’t using it for small loads as this makes it uneconomical. Speaking of the radiator, energy cost can be cut through radiators too. 5) Use the right fridge and freezer settings

You know you’re not using the right settings in your fridge or freezer if things feel too cold or too much ice is building up. You should try to match the settings in both compartments to the changing outdoor temperatures, i.e. in the winter you will need it on a lower setting whilst on the rare occasions it is a hot day then it’s fine to switch them up to higher settings.
