Building links is important to the success of any website. Be it an ecommerce site or a blog, links are vital, because the number and quality of links pointing to a site is an important factor considered by search engines while ranking a site. New websites and blogs find it difficult to build links, simply because links have to be earned, they just don’t come on its own in most of the cases. There are many link building services you can hire, but if you’re short on budget or if you want do it on your own, here are some successful practices. Most strategies discussed below require your time as an investment or you need to spend a few bucks if you decide to outsource it to someone.

1. Write Quality Content

Not the easiest one, but a very powerful strategy. Maintain a blog for your site and keep updating the blog with interesting articles about your business and industry. Remember, the content needs to be written keeping your target audience in mind, they should find it useful. If you have good content, there are chances that others would refer to your content in their posts, which are essentially backlinks. Apart from backlinks, adding fresh content to your site also sends a good signal to search engines.

2. Guest Blogging

Contributing content to other blogs in your industry or related industries is a widely used link building practice. Look for blogs accepting guest blogs and approach them with a post idea. If your post is accepted, most bloggers will allow you to give a couple of links to your site or blogs posts within the content or in the author bio.

3. Directory Submission

Submitting your site to directories is a good idea because, each approved listing is a backlink. Directory submission works best when used along with other strategies discussed in this article. You need to make sure the directories are indexed and are actively managed. You could get a list of free to submit directories from sources like Directory Critic and start submitting to each directory on your own which may take about 3 to 5 minutes for each directory. If you find it monotonous and boring, or short on time you may outsource it to a reliable directory submission service provider like Directory Maximizer who charges a small fee of 14 Cents for each submission.

4. Offer Something Free

Can you think of building some useful resource or a tool for free? For example, a children’s website can create a comprehensive list of summer camps in the city which would attract many parents to your site plus other bloggers might link it you instead of creating a whole list again. Similarly, think of offering some free tools on your site which has the potential of getting referrals from others.

5. Conduct Interviews

Can you connect with the industry leaders or thought leaders and do an interview? The interviewee is likely to link to the post plus others who are interested in hearing the person or find value in the interview would also mention about it, thus creating a backlink.

6. Create an Event Calendar

Create and maintain a calendar of events related to your industry. It can be local, national or international events. But make sure to make it very authentic and maintain it well by changing the dates etc when applicable. This would be useful for many others in the industry and they might link to your resource.
