If you are feeling stressed with work or have a situation where you would like to have some time away from work then a sabbatical can be an option for you. Most companies will allow you to take this unpaid leave as long as it is for a reasonable time period. However, you will not be paid for the time that you have missed and therefore need to consider how you will manage during this time when you are missing work.
It can be a good idea to save up during the months leading up to the sabbatical. Try to put a bit aside each month that you will be able to spend when you are not being paid. Remember that it will be the pay packet following the sabbatical, perhaps when you have returned to work, if it is only for a month, that you will not get and so plan properly. You could also try to incorporate bank holidays or some of your annual leave into it to save it costing so much money.
It can be worth getting into the habit of spending less money leading up to the sabbatical. Then you will have more money available for things that you need to buy. You can set a budget or just keep your spending to necessities. Often a sabbatical is not planned that far in advance. If this is the case then you will have to be prepared to tighten up on your spending even more. Obviously you do not want to worry too much about spending while you are off work, but it might be a good idea to set a budget so that you know what you can spend and will not have to stress about it.
It may be necessary to borrow money to keep you going during this time. This is something that will need a lot of thought though. Firstly you will need to think about the fact that you will have a debt and this could be a cause of stress which may not be desirable. You also need to consider whether you will be allowed to borrow the money and how much you will need. Think about whether you will be able to pay it back as well. Also consider the best way to borrow the money which will mean that it is the cheapest way for you to borrow it.
You may have things that you could sell to make some extra money. These could be anything that you own that has value to others. Consider the things that you have that you no longer use of need and whether it will be worth you selling them. You can sell in many places, such as online auctions, social media groups and classifieds websites. You could also sell at a table top sale, garage sale or other type. Even small things could raise money and it will all add up so that you could get enough to help you out while you are not working.
