Most people would not say no to a pay rise if it was offered to them, but do not know how to negotiate one for themselves. It may just seem to be a case of asking, but usually it is not as simple as this.

Before you start you need to make sure that you have done what is required to justify a pay rise. Think about whether you have been working hard enough and in the right way to justify one. If you have not been then you will need to start doing so, in order to prove that you are worthy pf a pay rise. Even if you have been working hard enough, have you been doing it in a way that has been noticed by those that are responsible for judging? If not, then you need to change the way that you are working so that those that matter can see what you are doing.

You will then need to find out how your company deals with pay rises. They may have a specific system or they may just wait until people ask for one. It may be that you have to have a promotion or change of job to get one. If you do not know how your company allocates them then find out. Ask at human resources, other colleagues or even your boss to find out.

Some companies will base their pay rises on the yearly appraisal. Only those that score highly enough on the appraisal will be able to get a pay rise. If this is the case in the company that you work for, then it is important to find out what you need to do to get a rise. It is likely that your previous appraisal would have raised some improvements that you could make. If this I the case, then it is important to work on those so that you can show that you have improved and therefore deserve a better appraisal this time.

In some companies, it is just a matter of asking whether you can have a pay rise. This can be very difficult for some people to do and easier for others. If you think that you deserve one and can justify it, then you should feel that you can ask for a rise. Choose a time when your boss is in a good mood, particularly if you have just produced a good piece of work. Consider the time of the day to ask as well and possibly get them a coffee before asking. This might be seen as obvious bribery but it could make a difference!

If you need a promotion to get a pay rise, then this could be more difficult to do. However, you should still find out how you go about getting one and see whether there is anything that you can do in order to improve your chances. It may just be a case of applying or it may be rather more complex.
