If you have metered water, then you could be wasting a lot of money paying for unnecessary water use. Many people are aware of some ways to save water, but it is worth considering a selection of things to see whether you can save money.
If you do not have a water meter then chances are that you are billed according to the number of bedrooms you have in your home. It could be cheaper to ask for a meter to be put in and you can find calculators online where you can work this out. If you do not want a meter or cannot have one, then the only way to save would be to move to a home with less bedrooms.
A water meter can be cheaper if there are just a few of you living in a big home. If you have more bedrooms than people then it is generally assumed that you will pass less with a water meter being installed. It is important to consider how much water you do use though. If you have lots of baths, wash vehicles, water the garden, run washing machines and dishwashers regularly then it could be expensive.
Fix drips and leaks
You may find that you are wasting water through leaky pipes or dripping taps. Getting these repaired may cost money, if you have to pay someone to do it. However, you are likely to make significant savings over the years with regards to the saving in water.
Don’t waste water
It is so important not to waste water if you are paying for every drop that you use. Do not run the washing machine or dishwasher unless they are full, do not run the tap while brushing teeth, do not overfill saucepans when boiling food, shower instead of bath, put water saving shower heads on and use up some space in the cistern so that there is less water used when you flush. Once you start to use less water it is easy to think of more ways that you can do so and you can bring the costs down.
Gather rain water
If you water the garden or wash the car with tap water then consider collecting rain water. You can do this in buckets but it more efficient to collect it from your roof using drain pipes and a water trough. You can then use this water when it is dry weather to water and to wash the car without having to pay.
