We are all expected to know what we want to do with our lives during the latter years of our school experience. Because of this, it is only natural that a lot of us end up changing our career path later down the line because we feel like we have taken an incorrect turn. With that in mind, read on to discover more about common career errors so you can avoid them.

You are coasting

There is only one place to begin, and this is with coasting – something we are all guilty of from time-to-time. If you have been doing the same role for quite some time now, it is very easy to start feeling comfortable and so you do not push yourself anymore. Nevertheless, you can go a long way by putting a little bit of effort in. You will get more from your job once you start pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

You don’t believe in yourself

Self-doubt can be very dangerous. Your colleagues are not going to believe in you if you do not believe in yourself. It is important to sound assured in your decisions and look for ways to build your self-confidence.

You are allowing pressure to take over

Do you feel stressed all of the time? If so, this is no way to have a career! Here are some tips to help you deal with this:

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle – If you do not look after yourself properly, then you are only going to add to the feeling of being stressed. You need to ensure you eat right and get a good night’s sleep.
  • Take short breaks throughout the day – Taking five to ten minutes to yourself can make a massive difference. You will be able to refresh your mind and you will return to the workplace with a more positive demeanor.
  • Look for someone to talk to – Most people feel much better when they have spoken to someone about the problems they are facing. You can feel the weight instantly lifted once you tell someone about how you are feeling.
  • Talk to your manager or supervisor – If you are feeling stressed because you are struggling to cope with the workload, don’t be afraid to ask for help. A lot of people feel this way and they simply suffer in silence because they don’t want to come across as though they cannot handle the job. It will only come back to haunt you if you do not speak up.

You have accepted the same rate of pay for years and years

Another sign that you are making a career blunder is if you have not had a pay rise for years now. This does not mean that you are not doing your job properly. However, you should not simply sit back and accept a stagnant rate of pay. There are a number of things you can do. Firstly, you could look to change your job provider. When doing this, remember that there are different payment setups available. Take a look at 100 commission real estate brokers as a good example of this. They enable their employees to take back everything they have earned because their pay is based on commission. This may be appealing to you. Another option is to simply talk to your boss about it. You have nothing to lose! However, you do need to go into the conversation prepared. Make sure you are armed with reasons why you deserve a pay increase and/or promotion.

You are allowing your skills to become out-of-date

Last but not least, another career mistake that people are making is allowing their set of skills to become outdated. It is imperative to keep up with technology in the current day and age. You need to make sure that your skill base is relevant. If you are not up to date with everything that is going on with your industry and all of the latest tech skills needed in the modern digital age, you will only keep falling behind.
